On Saturday 27th March 2004 the building number 816 of Royal Niestern Sander was christened and launched.

This date forms a milestone for this very special project of the shipyard 'Royal' Niestern Sander.

Image It is the first time in the 100 years existence of the shipyard that a vessel has been build for an end user as the French Navy.
During this summer the vessel will be delivered to the client being CNN (Compagnie Nationale de Navigation) in Paris. Together with their partner THALES CNN will equip the vessel furthermore in France for their specific tasks as a research vessel, after what the vessel will be delivered to the French Navy.

This project is for Royal Niestern Sander the most complex project in 100 years of existence, even if bigger vessels were regularly build during the last years. The vessel has been build completely on the shipyard of Farmsum with the help of regional subcontractors and furnishers.

The vessel has been named after Henri Dupuy de Lôme, a 19th century naval architect of the French Marine. The traditional transverse launching was preceded by the christening by Ms Lamoulen, the wife of a director of the French Ministry of Defense.

The heavy weight and the slender hullform made of the transverse launching a spectacular happening which for a very long time will not be forgotten by all invited French guests.

This project proves that the Netherland's shipbuilding industry is still full of life and most concurrential on the international market. Following orders are however based on hulls build elsewhere.

Without the 6% subsidy for tankers and container vessels the chances to see future transverse launchings in
Delfzijl are becoming very small.
Maybe that for this reason the people were so silent and stressed just before the launching. The extreme enthusiasm of the French people invited was nevertheless not diminished at all by such reasons.
