The Apollo Damsterdijk is designed by Conoship and built by Chowgule, India.
Big Business in small ships

Dutch strengths in the smaller classes of multi-pur-pose cargo vessel and shortsea trader continue to find fresh expression in the fertile development of new designs and design proposals, moulded by a close understanding of operators' needs and the competitive importance of production-friendliness.

On behalf of Reederei M. Lauterjung - Sunship Schiffahrtskontor, Groningen-based Conoship International has prepared the design for a new class of versatile, single-hold, 5,670dwt vessel in close collaboration with the German owner. Five newbuilds have been contracted by Lauterjung at an unspecified yard, and the series could run to 10 such vessels if options are exercised. Each will he equipped with two port-side-mounted, 60t deck cranes, and the single hold will incorporate movable tweendeck pontoons to permit vertical positioning at two points.

The new breed offers a broad trading scope, including timber, paper, hulk commodities such as coal and grain, heavy items of freight and dangerous goods. In addition, the type lends itself to a substantial container load, with the ship's deadweight in relation to total slots for 390teu suggesting a high laden box intake. The hold runs for
64m of the design's 108.2m overall length, and for 13.2m of the 16.6m moulded breadth, and provides a capacity of 7,300m3. Each of the newbuilds has been specified with a 3,150k W main engine, for a contractual trials speed of 14.Skt, and 480kW bow thruster.

Two 5,500dwt general cargo vessels contracted from Conoship member Barkmeijer Shipyards are a development on the 4,504dwt series of 14 ships produced to date by the Stroobos yard. The new, larger class is set to make its operational debut towards the end of 2008, offering a 6,800m3 underdeck capacity within a single hold that accounts for some 72m of the vessel's overall length of 99.8m. Barkmeijer has also begun construction of a somewhat faster vessel of 5,850dwt and 7,450m3, embodying a single hold of 62m suited to bulk, project and unitised cargoes.
All three shareholding members of Conoship - Barkmeijer. Bodewes Shipyards and Royal Niestern Sander - have lengthy orderhooks. Despite this limited membership size, Conoship's influence on small-ship design now extends worldwide as a consequence of a change of business strategy. From January 2004 onwards. the company also started to take on projects directly from shipowners and other maritime and logistic players, as well as for other yards, both in the Netherlands and abroad. To distinguish the latter from its shareholders. non-member firms for whom Conoship acts are defined as "associated shipyards".

A Conoship-originated multi-purpose cargo vessel design of 4,450dwt has provided the technical foundation for the drive into the European shortsea sector by Indian associated shipyard Chowgule & Company's shipbuild¬ing division. The ensuing succession of contracts from German, Dutch and UK owners will provide an injection of 20 newbuilds into the European shortsea hulk traffic.
Conoship's prolific design team has prepared a lengthened version of the 4,450dwt multipurpose type for Chowgule's Goa yard. The 5,680dwt addition to the range has a length overall of 105.35m and a payload volume of some 7,080m3 in two holds. It is strengthened for loading aground and for cargoes such as steel coils while catering to the needs of general hulk commodity trading.
Another of the northern Dutch company's associated shipyards, Thanh Long Company in Vietnam. has received a major boost with a contract encompassing 10 multi-purpose cargo vessels of 2,550dwt. The associated yard network has been further expanded recently through the enrolment of Destini Marine Indonesia in Jakarta.

On the home front, Conoship designs figure prominently in production at the modern Bijlsma yard in Lemmer, controlled by the Veka group. Earlier this year, Bijlsma's orderhook comprised more than 25 seagoing newbuilds, including 18 of a Conoship-developed design of around 3,200dwt, for operation within the extensive fleet managed from Delfzijl by Wagenborg Shipping. The type embodies a single hold within main hull dimensions of nearly 89m length overall by 11.8m breadth, and distinguished by a high cubic capacity, well-suited to forestry products and other goods.
