At the heart of Conoship International lies a strong commitment to developing innovative maritime solutions that support greener shipping and protect the waters we navigate. One such innovation is the ECO-8500 developed in close cooperation with Boomsma Shipping: a series of eco-friendly, diesel-electric dry cargo vessels designed to meet the growing need for sustainable short-sea transport.

New Order by JR Shipping

JR Shipping has confirmed their order for two dry cargo vessels from the ECO-8500 series with Chowgule Shipyards. We congratulate them on their decision to invest in the ECO-8500, supporting a more sustainable maritime future.

The ECO-8500 series was previously ordered by Boomsma Shipping and Leonhardt & Blumberg. This series consists of eight low-emission dry cargo vessels designed by Conoship International and built by the Chowgule yard group in India.

Delivery of the two vessels for JR Shipping is expected in June 2027 and February 2028.

Design and Cargo Versatility of the ECO-8500

These diesel-electric, high-cubic-capacity ECO-8500 vessels are equipped with features that contribute to a greener future. They are engineered to efficiently and safely handle a wide range of cargo types. Their hallmark is a spacious, optimized single hold, designed for maximum cargo flexibility.

The key specifications of the vessels include:

  • Deadweight: 8,500 tonnes (DWT)
  • Hold volume: 13,900 m³
  • Hold features:
    • Box-shaped single hold
    • Open-top configuration
    • Complete tween deck for cargo adaptability

Another standout feature is the ability to carry containers, breakbulk, and dry bulk commodities, making them an ideal workhorse for dynamic short sea operations.

Diesel-Electric Propulsion with Emission Control

At the core of the ECO-8500 is an advanced diesel-electric propulsion system. These powerful vessels are equipped with:

  • Four Volvo Penta Tier III generator sets
  • Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to drastically reduce NOₓ emissions
  • Modular engine room, designed for easy conversion to alternative fuels in the future

This configuration supports optimized operations and ensures full compliance with the latest IMO environmental regulations.

Built for a Greener Future

With sustainability embedded into every vessel, the series is designed to actively reduce the impact on maritime emissions.

As the shipping industry grows and adapts to the evolving needs to protect the seas, the ECO-8500 is also equipped with a range of green technologies including:

  • Wind-assisted propulsion readiness
  • Battery-electric hybrid compatibility
  • Carbon capture system integration

Since sustainability is a shared priority, the vessels designed by Conoship are future-ready and able to adapt to upcoming regulatory and technological changes without requiring major redesign.

The ECO-8500 series is more than just a collection of vessels; it is a platform for innovation and progress, combining robust cargo-handling capabilities with cutting-edge environmental performance.

Conoship, alongside JR Shipping, Boomsma Shipping, and Leonhardt & Blumberg, is charting a new course for short sea shipping in Europe and beyond. With construction underway and deliveries on the horizon, the ECO-8500 is set to become a benchmark in sustainable maritime transport.
