Design philosophy of the Cable Recovery Vessel Grace
Converting an aging general cargo vessel into a highly specialized cable recovery asset requires overcoming legacy design gaps and major weight distribution shifts. Integrating five massive internal cable tanks (72 tonnes), elevated cable walkways, heavy recovery winches, and an overhanging bow chute subjects the existing hull structure to asymmetrical dynamic loads and elevated vertical centers of gravity.
Conoship’s engineering approach centered on converting fragmented legacy documentation into an organized basic engineering model. By performing comprehensive global stability recalibrations, structural reinforcement layouts, and deck load distribution engineering, we ensured the vessel maintained strict safety margins under heavy cable recovery tension without compromising deadweight performance.
Engineering Scope: What Conoship Executed
Legacy Design Standardization & Basic Engineering: Reconstructed complete basic engineering data packages from legacy vessel documentation, establishing a reliable architectural baseline for complex conversion modeling.
Global & Local Stability Recalibration: Executed complete hydrostatic calculations, lightship weight recalculations, and reserve stability verification to handle severe top-weight additions from cable tanks, tensioners, and high-mounted cable walkways.
Structural Integration for Specialized Deck & Hold Machinery: Engineered structural foundations and hull stiffening for five internal cable tanks, a 20-tonne load capacity bow chute, cable recovery winches, and deck container arrangements.
Cargo Hold & Forecastle Modification Engineering: Designed structural alterations for cargo hold hatch covers, ventilation casing rebuilds, forward mast repositioning, and relocated forward mooring appliances to accommodate cable routing pathways.
